Rolly Obedencio is interested in how English should be spoken by non-native speakers. An accomplished conversation teacher, he has been teaching ESL in the Philippines, China and Thailand for nine years. His interest in teaching ESL sparked when a group of Korean graduate students requested him to help them sharpen their English speaking skills to compensate their grammar courses, Michigan Test preparation and graduate courses.

His theoretical background and exposure to reading, translation, exegesis and interpretation of the ancient Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek languages into English at the graduate level developed some of his comparative linguistic skills, particularly in the areas of semantics, morphology, syntax and phonology. Added to his theoretical linguistics is his training in applied linguistics, particularly in TESOL. His oral skills, acquired from his theological-pastoral background, paved the way for applied linguistics, giving him more opportunities in training both ESL students and teacher trainees in phonology. He is also skilled in both qualitative and quantitative research using computer-assisted methodologies. He is currently pursuing his second MA in Educational Leadership. He lives in Bangkok at the moment.

PHILOSOPHY:

Learning is a total development of at least four major aspects of a human being: the physical, mental-psychological, social and spiritual aspects. Taking a Christian spiritual perspective as a key to enhancing all aspects, faith and learning should be incorporated in teaching. Coupled with a constructivist approach, through processes of accommodation and assimilation of knowledge and experience, with strategies adapted to various learning styles of students, it is believed that augmenting these various skills in cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains will finally hone a learner’s language proficiency to a considerably great degree.
